This is a labor intensive process. We have estimated that each “iddy-biddy” tile is handled 22 times; from the opening of the bag of clay to the grouting. The cuting and fitting stage is slow and methodical. The main design is composed and the tiles are glued in place. Then, borders are cut and adhered. When the entire surface is accounted for, medium sized pieces are placed in appropriate open areas. Slowly, the remaining open areas begin to fill up. The real challenge comes on the final pass. This requires the utmost patience and cutting. Too much space between tiles leaves the whole piece looking empty and bare. Too much tile makes it look busy and difficult to see patterns and collective images. |
